No Needle Acupuncture
We Never Use Needles When We Perform Acupuncture
Wait—how can you offer acupuncture without needles?
Simple. The term “acupuncture needle” is actually a misnomer.
In most English-speaking countries, the word “needle” immediately brings to mind hypodermic needles—sharp, hollow devices used for injections and blood draws. No wonder people cringe at the thought! But what we use in acupuncture is nothing like that.
The tool used in acupuncture is called a filiform. The word “filiform” means “thread-like” or “shaped like a filament,” and that’s exactly what it is: an ultra-thin, solid, stainless-steel filament- engineered specifically to pass through the skin with minimal, if any, discomfort.
Most people barely feel them. In fact, the tip of the filiform is patented for its design. The Japanese, in particular, have perfected the art of creating pain-free filiforms. These are nothing like the thick, piercing hypodermic needles that make most of us anxious.
Let’s be honest: who actually likes hypodermic needles? No one.
It’s time to change the way we talk about acupuncture. So let’s let go of the word “needle” and start calling it what it really is: a filiform.
